Off Again

Well we're off again. Tonight we're flying to Seattle then early tomorrow morning we're getting the clipper ferry to Vancouver Island then a Greyhound bus to Cowichan Bay for a wedding which will take place on Saturday. Just thinking about it makes me want to curl up and sleep...We're looking forward to the scenery and hopefully to cooler weather. I like cool weather these days :D

Yesterday we had an echo cardiogram to check the baby's heart and everything looks good. That was nice to hear. The baby however is like it's father and is very stubborn. He/She had its chin resting on its chest and even though the Dr. had me doing jumping jacks, baby refused to lift it's head. Later on at the obstretritian's he decided to give the doppler device a few kicks while we were checking for its heartbeat. We'll have to have a word with him/her about their behaviour...

Half Way There!

This past week was busy. I started Physical Therapy because my back has been hurting pretty bad recently. Of course, when I went to the PT appointment my back felt just fine so I felt like a fraud :P Now I have some exercises I'm supposed to do once or twice a day and I have two PT appointments every week for the next few weeks. I'm beginning to see a bit too much of UCLA hospital...

In other news I finished a very cute baby cardigan for some friends of ours who are having a baby girl about a month before us. It feels like quite an accomplishment to finally get the cardigan made! I just need to sew up the arms now and get some cute buttons.

On Saturday we went to O'Melverny Park with some friends. We celebrated three birthdays and had a very enjoyable picnic in a lovely shaded area. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

We are 20 weeks pregnant now, officially halfway through, just another 20 more to go. Pregnancies take way too long in my opinion. Everything seems to be going well however and this is probably the easier part of the pregnancy. I have appointments this week with my ob/gyn and with my diabetes nurse. I need to see if it will be okay for me to fly with Andrew to D.C. the end of August.

That's all the news for now I think. A pretty uneventful week, not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Thumbs Up!

Well, we've been home almost a week now. I'm almost back in LA time, still a bit sleepy in the evenings. I still need to get my knitting needles out again. I need some inspiration!

Today we went for our big 19 week scan. It was so fun to see the little baby move and study each detail. I lay in the ultrasound room for a whole hour while the radiologist checked everything!

She started on the head and made her way down to the toes. Counting every little digit and measuring everything there was to be measured including arteries and ventricles in the brain. The pictures were so clear you could see the chambers of the heart. She even got a photo of the baby’s nostrils!

It was unreal. The baby was moving lots and even gave us a thumbs up :D The radiologist identified the baby’s gender but she didn't tell us because we asked her not to. It was very hard not to sneak a peak though :)

The pictures are not as clear as the 11 week scan because the baby was more squished this time and we didn't really see the whole baby like we did when it was smaller, the picture of his arm is pretty impressive though!

A Week of Weddings, Friends and Family

This week was a great week, but very busy. I'm very thankful that my energy levels have returned (mostly). Monday was Phil and Katie's wedding. Phil and Katie both traveled all the way to LA last year for our wedding so we were really glad to have made it to Ireland to celebrate theirs this year. We aren't allowed to post wedding photos online, so I'll put up a photo of myself and Andrew and picture with a friend who's also pregnant (there were several pregnant people at this wedding actually)

Tuesday we went to visit Stephen and Siobhain and finally got to meet Levi. He's such a cutie. Sara, their 2 year old, is also a one woman show. She's hilarious, she talks so much and is extremely bright. Unfortunately we forgot our camera, so no photos.

Wednesday was spent with the whole family visiting Garnish Island to celebrate Dad's 60th birthday. It was a beautiful day, the weather was perfect and the scenery glorious. We ended the day with a birthday meal at the Poacher's Inn in Bandon. Great Fish pie!

Thursday we traveled to Limerick to see Garret and Jacqueline and their new baby girl Grace Hannah. It was so nice to see Jesse and Samuel again and to meet their sweet little sister. Grace was only 10 days old and very tiny. I've seen and held smaller babies than her, however, it felt a little closer to home this time. I must say it was a bit nerve wracking to think that we'd be having a tiny little one like this in our home soon! Again, we forgot our camera...

Friday was wedding number two. Our dear friends Fons and Beatrice De Wit's daughter Kelly married Brian O'Mahony. These two are a really lovely couple and I really enjoyed seeing them get married. Beatrice made a beautiful wedding cake and I really loved the South African (Beatrice is South African) touches in the wedding, in particular the protea in the bride's bouquet and on the cake.

Back Home

We're in Ireland for a couple of weeks right now. Wish it was more like a couple of months! I love this place, even though so far I've been just sitting at home suffering from melatonin free jet lag. It hasn't been too bad though, and this morning I slept until 8am, so I'm getting there. Hopefully I'll get through the day today without having to nap. Phil and Katie's wedding is tomorrow so not needing to nap during that would be very helpful :D

We totally forgot cameras which is really quite a bummer, I mean, not only are we in Ireland for two weeks, but we're going to to two weddings! Cameras are needed! For the weddings I brought a dress and shoes and am stealing all accessories from my mother. Saves a lot of money!! Anyway, I think I'll manage this dress for the next two weddings but I'll probably need yet another one for the Eng wedding in August. This, getting bigger every week, is really not helpful when one has weddings throughout the summer...

Soakers

I have gone knitting crazy this past week. My friend Guinevere has got me hooked!

Since I've decided that I'm going to use reusable nappies for the baby I've been getting lots of advice from a friend from Arizona, Abby Green, who is a very practical mum who has been using them for her little guy, Ezra, for the past year. Along with all the very cool different kinds of nappies that you can use she highly recommended wool soakers as a nappy cover. These soakers are breathable and when soaked in lanolin they are also water resistant and can be used quite a often before they need to be washed. So I decided to get to work and start knitting some soakers for Baby Fung. I went a bit crazy, I have now knitted the best part of 4 soakers. I'm waiting on some wool to finish soaker #2 and soaker #4 should be done today. Unfortunately soaker #3 won't be functional as a soaker because I stupidly knitted with cotton yarn which is not water resistant. Oh well, it's still cute and I can just use it as a pants, over another soaker :D

Andrew and I spent his day off yesterday exploring Pasadena. It's a nice town but it was way too hot, as it generally is in LA these days. We're heading to Ireland next week-I cannot wait! I'm especially going to enjoy the cooler weather. I have two appointments this week, may get to see the baby on u/s tomorrow, and one appointment next week before we fly off. I don't know what they're going to do without seeing me for a whole two weeks. UCLA medical centre just won't be the same!

Anyway, I should get some lunch now and get some work done today, including my Chinese homework-ugh!

1 week at home

Well I have one week of my summer holidays under my belt and I spent it tired! At 14 weeks pregnant I'm expecting more from this week-I'm waiting to get that long awaited second trimester energy burst. I went for a walk this morning and did some shopping and I felt more energetic, however after lunch I slept for 3 hours. Oh well, maybe I'll get some things done this evening instead.

We attended a friend's wedding on Saturday, barely. I was so exhausted I thought I wouldn't make it, but thankfully after a nap I did. Before I realised I was pregnant I bought this gorgeous dress for this wedding and Phil and Katie's wedding. I was still hoping I'd manage to pull it off for both weddings. I did manage to wear it on Saturday but I think it'll have to be packed away for a while, it was a bit of a squeeze :P At this point I don't look pregnant, I just look like I've gorged myself on one too many In 'n Out burgers.

It was nice to see a lot of Andrew's old college friends at the wedding-it was like a little reunion :)

This week I have my diabetes nurse appointment and that's it. One appointment in a week is like a little holiday!

That's it, a kind of boring update, but I can do boring updates now that I have more time on my hands :D

Morro Bay etc...

So today, I discovered that I will not be having an ultrasound every two weeks as I was originally told, but I will be just having regular ob/gyn appointments every two weeks for the second trimester and sometimes there will be an ultrasound, it'll be back to regular ultrasounds once I hit 28 weeks. I kind prefer things this way. Less ultrasounds means that my ob/gyn is more relaxed about my pregnancy which makes me more relaxed (I'm a ridiculous worrier). I did get to hear the heartbeat today and that's always nice :)

Andrew and I just got back from a very fun weekend in Morro Bay, CA, celebrating our 1st anniversary and eating lots of yummy seafood (very glad that my appetite is back!).
We got to tour Hearst Castle and enjoy strolling around the little seaside town of Morro Bay. We did a lot of eating, watched movies on netflix and played our new game of Fung-opoly. My energy levels are still at about 50% so Andrew had to be content to do a lot of relaxing :) It was probably good for him-I keep telling myself that anyway :D

We have some exciting news! We are expecting a baby this December 26th! Our family is growing some more! We just hope the baby and the fish will get on :D

Day Nineteen Philippines Adventure

Today we are travelling to Hong Kong. We left Roxas at 6:30am. We said goodbye to Lazarus and Gordon (the Gekko) and sadly we said goodbye to Maryanna, Eden and the hospital. Dan drove us to Puerto Princesa where we bade farewell and went through security at the airport. They are really not used to insulin pumps here, I need to explain it every time. We did some last minute souvenir shopping and Andrew had a 30 minute massage.

On arriving in Manila we discovered that my friends dad was very sick and was unable to meet us for lunch. Thankfully Ayee had come to pick up some items from us so we were able to spend some more time with her-it’s been so nice to see Ayee again.

As we flew out of Manila this evening Gordan came to say one last goodbye. We really felt sad leaving because we are going to miss all the dear friends that we made and got to spend time with in Manila.

We were excited about Hong Kong too though! We were met at the airport by smells of dim sum and a chauffeur to drive us to our fancy schmancy hotel. We are looking forward to exploring this city over the next couple of days. My first taste of Andrew’s parents homeland.

Day Eighteen Philippines Adventure

This morning we woke up to a new sound. Screeching, constant….screeching…. Turns out it was a squirrel who was being bothered by the cats. I’m glad the squirrels in LA don’t make a noise like that!

I went into Roxas with Eden today to do some last minute shopping and to go to the internet café. Another black out meant no internet however. I did have a successful shopping trip though and got some very cool Philippines t-shirts for me and Andrew.

Today the staff at Palawan Baptist Hospital organised a goodbye party for us. They made a huge grilled fish for us along with coconut pie and lumpia (and many other lovely foods). Andrew and I wore our new t-shirts with the map of the Philippines on the chest. Andrew gave a speech. My favourite quote:

“When we go home we’re going to wear these t-shirts. When people ask us where we were I’ll just point to my chest. When people ask us if we had a good time, I’ll just point to my stomach.”

My favourite part of the party was when the staff all sang for us. It was so beautiful. Andrew recorded it. I’m going to see if I can post it here.

Day Seventeen Philippines Adventure

This morning Ayee traveled back to Manila, leaving at 6am. I slept in and woke with horrible back pain. The muscles in my back were ACHING! I swam quite a bit yesterday and when I swim I do the breast stroke which uses a lot of unused back muscles. This made it hard to be on my feet too much so I spent the day lying down a lot. It was also EXTREMELY hot. So I spent the day in our room with the fan blasting lying down reading a book about Vietnam and revising my Chinese. I know more than I ever knew about Vietnam and I can now count to ten in Mandarin. My back still hurts and my arm still burns. But being in the jungle, seeing my first chameleon, eating with the Bundacs, watching our new friend Suzy eat noodles, and enjoying some jack fruit and star apple makes it all worth it!

Day Sixteen Philippines Adventure

Today was our island hopping day! Ayee, Eden and I took a van to Port Barton for the day. We hired a boat to take us to some of the small islands off the coast of Port Barton. We started with some snorkeling. This was a lot of fun seeing the coral reef and all the beautiful fish.Unfortunately my mask kept leaking and I ended up inhaling a load of sea water-ugh! We then went to two islands. On the first island they grilled fish for us for our lunch-they caught the fish just that morning. On the second island we did some swimming in the WARM water –the water and the sand was gorgeous! The only thing missing was having Andrew there-he was too busy at the lab. Next time!

I wore a full body swimsuit in hopes that I wouldn’t have to worry so much about getting sunburn. Unfortunately I used spray on sun block on my arms and missed a spot. I have a horrible burn on the back of my arm. I give up!

Back at the hospital Ayee became another control sample for Andrew and Jonnas. I donated another 10 ml of saliva. Just after eating chocolate. Yuck.

Day Fifteen Philippines Adventure

Today we visited Roxas Baptist Church for Sunday morning service. We enjoyed fellowship with believers and the beautiful singing of the choir. A lot of the staff from Palawan Baptist Hospital attend this church. After this we went for lunch with Cheryl; one of the missionaries who works at the hospital, and Pastor Tan and his family. That evening Ayee and I watched a movie about the missionaries who were killed by the Waodani tribe in Ecuador. It was a really good movie, now I want to watch the documentary “Beyond the Gates of Splendour” I’ll be looking that one up when we get home!

Day Fourteen Philippines Adventure

Today was spent recovering from our travels on Thursday and Friday. Andrew spent most of the day sorting out the newly shipped equipment in the lab and training Jonnas on how to use it. Some new experiments were done today which seem to have worked and should help a lot with some of the saliva analysis.

Ayee and I explored Roxas together. Ayee thought it was amusing to have me show her around a Filipino town. We bought some fresh fish at the market and Andrew steamed it Fung style. It was so yummy and so fresh! We also bought some baked goods and celebrated Jonnas's birthday at dinner time. There are many friends that we have made here that we would like to pack up in our suitcases and take back to LA with us :) Ayee and I are planning a trip on Monday to go island hopping and maybe snorkeling...roll on the touring!

Day Thirteen Philippines Adventure

Today was spent travelling to Sabang where we got a "ferry" to the underground river. The road to Sabang had about 15 minutes of dirt road-VERY uncomfortable... When we got to Sabang we took a boat, which was like a large canoe with outriggers to help balance the boat, across very high waves! By the time we were done our stomachs were feeling a little dodgy! The underground river was beautiful though-I loved seeing thousands of little bats hanging upside down inside the cave and seeing the unique rock formations. On our return to Sabang we went to a spa and had a massage (I fell asleep) and then we had some good Filipino food with coconut water-yum!

Day Twelve Philippines Adventure

Today we drove down to Puerto. I finally got to do some souvenir shopping! We bought gifts for the family and some clothes for ourselves-fun!

Who made it to Palawan first? Andrew's shipment-by a few hours! Praise God Andrew's shipment arrived with minimal customs payment and all in one piece. Ayee also arrived safely and she was such a huge help all day. We had to rush to a tourist office to purchase tickets to the underground lake. It's a very popular destination so the only tickets we could get were for 8:30am, this means leaving the hotel tomorrow at 6am! Ayee's Tagalog and knowledge of the Philippines was so helpful in all the negotiations.

We hired a trike for the evening and explored Puerto a little bit and then enjoyed dinner: crocodile and goat meat-yummy!

Now we are back at our lovely hotel, A&A Plaza, with wireless internet. We're tired but looking forward to our adventures tomorrow. Good night!

We ended day eleven with dinner at the hospital pastor's home. We enjoyed our time there with great food and great company. After this Dan noticed that the light in the delivery room was on. He went up to see if they were delivering a baby and then he invited me up to see the newborn baby girl. I got to see a half hour old baby! That was a lot of fun!

When we got home Lazarus had pooped on our bed. He's getting WAY too comfortable...
